When the Life You Built Abroad No Longer Feels Quite Right
There can be a strange moment in life abroad when nothing is obviously wrong — but something doesn’t feel quite right anymore.
You may have built a career, friendships, routines and perhaps a family in another country.
What once felt new has become normal.
From the outside, it may look like you have created exactly the life you wanted.
And yet you find yourself wondering:
Is this still the life I want?
Life abroad changes — and so do you
Moving abroad often starts with very visible changes: a new country, language, job, home and social circle.
But some of the biggest changes happen much more slowly.
Over the years, your priorities can shift. Relationships change. Careers develop. You may become a parent. The place that once felt temporary may become home — while your original home starts to feel different too.
At some point, the question may no longer be whether you can build a life abroad.
You already did.
The question becomes whether the life you built still fits you.
Feeling unsettled doesn’t mean you need to leave
When these questions appear, it can be tempting to turn them immediately into a geographical decision:
Should we stay?
Should we move home?
Should we try another country?
But location isn't always the real question.
Sometimes what is missing is more personal: meaningful work, stronger friendships, time for yourself, a different rhythm, greater connection or simply a clearer sense of what you want next.
Before asking “Where should I live?”, ask something else
Try starting with:
What is working in the life I have built?
What no longer fits?
What am I missing?
What would I like the next chapter of my life to contain?
You may discover that the answer requires a big change.
Or you may discover that you want to stay exactly where you are — but live differently within the life you already have.
Living abroad can make questions about identity, career, family and belonging unusually intertwined.
You don’t need to have the answer before you start exploring them.
This is one of the areas I work with in my 1:1 coaching for professional women living abroad.
